Disconnecting Your Battery

Safety is key when working under the hood, so put on a set of insulated work gloves and goggles to protect yourself from sparks and corrosive chemicals. Work in a ventilated area and take off any metal accessories that could get in the way of your work. We also recommend grabbing zip ties to keep your cables secure, along with two wrenches or pliers to work quickly.

• Make sure your car is off. Look for a negative terminal on your battery with a black cap or minus sign.
• Use one wrench or pliers to remove the bolt head of the negative terminal.
• Use the second wrench or pliers to remove the nut, and pull the negative cable away. Secure this cable away from the battery.
• Repeat the same process for the positive terminal. Place a cloth over the positive cable end to avoid metal-to-metal contact, and keep the two cables away from each other.
• Remove the securing bracket if your car has one.
• Lift the battery straight out of the car. The battery will be heavy.

Installing Your Battery
